The Yearbook Blues/ Jill-of-all-Trades

It's been a while since my last post. Any yearbook advisors out there? Maybe you can feel my pain. I am a first year yearbook advisor. We have a huge deadline coming up and I've been pulling my hair out. I have been eating, sleeping, and drinking yearbook. In two weeks we have to submit 40 pages. I have personally completed about 12 pages. The other 28 pages are the students' responsibility and they are in various states of incompleteness.

Is it poor teaching to create so many of the pages myself? Definitely. Do I know how to get the kids to do it? Nope. How can I teach them something I have no idea how to do myself? Plus, 20 kids are sharing 5 computers and one camera.

Anyway, here is how I have been feeling about myself and my hyperactive hobbies lately.

Jill of All Trades.
I am Carol Ann’s daughter,

A sub-par potter.

I’m a slow-jogging-runner

And a never-would’ve been swimmer.

I’m a don’t-like-to-fighter,

And an undeveloped writer.

The child of a preacher,

I’m a tough-as-nails teacher.

I’m a going-nowhere-actor,

And an adequate director.

I’m a Jill-of-all-trades,

Mistress of none,

Lucky for me,

I never quit when I’m down.

  1. While the writing of this poem is well-done, I think its a lot more down on yourself than is fair. You left out all the things you do well- being a wife, a fur-baby mommy, a gardener, and you downplay your accomplishments as nothing much. I mean, as far as your acting/producing stuff, you didn't exactly go to Juliard. For an English major at CBU with a MINOR in drama, I think you have done tremendously well with the lack of training you have received. Sub-par, adequate, undeveloped- you have picked some pretty unflattering words for a pretty accomplished lady. I mean, how many people have even TRIED to do half those things? Not many. How about mission trip team leader, Sunday school teacher, singer, sister, daughter, aunt, etc, etc?
NOBODY gets to be an expert at everything at 27. The only way you could be an expert by now is if you had only picked like 2 things you were going to focus all your energy into, and then you could have acheived excellence. Besides, you have to save something to work on for the next 60 years of your life!

  3. Thank the Lord for the last sentence. Print that several times on pieces of paper and pin them up where you can see them. Oh, and add 'I don't realise how wonderful I am.'

  4. I have to agree with Carolyn, you have a lot going on. As a teacher myself I feel your frustration, but unfortunately I don't have any out of this world advice other than keep at it!

  5. Thank you to everyone who responded to this post. Every fall I go through a period of intense frustration- in my opinion the fall is the worst time for teachers. Thanks for all the positive feedback.
