A hidden room in a dream

I had that dream again last night. The situation changes, the faces change, but there is always the hidden room. Through a small door, through a small tunnel, through a narrow tall hallway so tight you have to hold your breath to squeeze through. The way is always dark and hard to find, with many ways to get lost in the darkness.  At the end of your journey, which is sometimes long and sometimes short, depending on the dream, there is a room. The room changes. Sometimes there are people holding secret meetings, sometimes there’s treasure, sometimes there are just lost and forgotten boxes. The worst thing about the room is the knowledge that you have to come back out the way you came in and sometimes you have to go alone.
I have dreamt about this room for years, I realized this morning when I woke up. And I can’t shake the feeling that it’s based on a real place I’ve been before- somewhere as a child, possibly? I find the possibility frightening.

  1. Wow. I've also dreamt for years about a hidden room. It's always an attic room, suspended high and reached by a set of stairs that double back on themselves. The stairs are usually hidden away in a closet, like in old houses. The room always gives me the creeps, but there's nothing in it. It's just because no one ever goes up there. In the dream, I'm always in a nice house, warm and comfortable, feeling good, and then I remember THE ROOM. *brrrrrrrr*

  2. Amazing how vivid your dream is - I have recurring dreams but there's an element of vagueness..

  3. Thanks for the comments, Bryan and David. I wonder what a psychologist would say about the meaning of hidden rooms in dreams?

Your dream reminds me of the story above, and an picture book edition of it I saw in school.

At a very basic level, I would interpret your hidden room as a manifestation of things you push aside during waking hours because they are too disturbing or unhelpful to remember and focus on while you go through day to day life. But at the end of the day, your mind brings those things back up in the form of a hidden place that you can never quite escape from.

  5. Lately I have been having a plethora of naked dreams- I have left the house without enough clothes on. Lately I have been in the mall wearing only pants and I realize it once I'm already all the way in the mall and there are lots of people around who I know and who want to talk to me as I try to leave. Interestingly, in the dream I never buy clothes AT the mall, which would solve the nudity problem post-haste, instead I don't even consider that and try to get home to put something on instead. Perhaps now that I have realized this I can send myself a lucid message the next time to drop into the closest store and get a shirt- sometimes I can do that in my dreams.
